Immunology

Our immune system recognizes and protects us against foreign invaders (antigens) that do not belong in our body. To protect us against harmful antigens (e.g. those found within or on bacteria, viruses, cancer cells, etc.), the immune system prepares an immune response that is carried out by a complex system of:
– physical barriers (e.g. the skin or the respiratory, digestive, urinary and reproductive membranes lining)
– white blood cells (leukocytes)
– molecules (cytokines, antibodies, proteins); and
– lymphoid organs (bone marrow, thymus, spleen, lymph nodes, tonsils, appendix, etc)

Stress, lack of sleep, poor nutrition, use of antibiotics, chronic diseases (e.g. diabetes) and other factors weaken the immune response to antigens. As a result, we become more susceptible to viral, bacterial and other infections, which tend to be more severe and prolonged.

We can strengthen our immune system by reducing stress, avoiding physical and psychological exhaustion, adhering to a healthy diet and increasing our intake of immunomodulators (e.g. Imunobor).
